Andy Whitfields Cancer Returns, Quits ‘Spartacus’
Spartacus: Blood and Sand studly star, Andy Whitfield, will not be returning to Starz original series for the upcoming second season, due to cancer recurrence. Whitfield, seen above, was in attendance at Comic-Con in San Diego on July 23rd, and, at the time had plans to return to the series.
In August, we reported that Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In an online forum, he thanked his fans for their well wishes and support. He was quoted as saying, “I am now training again and hungry to reunite with the fantastic cast and crew.”
But today, People reports the sad news, “It’s with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as ‘Spartacus’ and all the wonderful people involved.” Whitfield said in a new statement. “It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey.” Whitfield started treatment in March soon after he learned about his diagnosis with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
What terrible news! Whitfield is just 36-years-old and his career was recently gaining speed. His other projects include a slew of television series, but Spartacus was his most popular role.
