‘American Idol’ Winner Lee DeWyze And Crystal Bowersox Sales Underwhelming

So the first singles from American Idol winner Lee DeWyze and runner-up Crystal Bowersox, who performed on The Today Show today, are not selling up to standards. The first week of digital sales for DeWyze’s cover of U2’s “Beautiful Day” were down about 30 percent from Kris Allen’s victory song last year and Crystal’s cover “Up to the Mountain” sold about half as many copies as DeWyze’s.

E! online speculates that the issue is the decision to use covers instead of new songs or at least non-obscure covers. “The statement from we, the consumers, seems to be, if Idol isn’t going to care, then neither are we” the writer says.

I can’t pretend I know that much about the workings of Idol, but I know people and I know they like money. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone thought these songs were a brilliant idea. Besides if the ratings were down for the show, that probably has an influence on the sales. Or they should have let him record this acoustic version he did on The Today Show, it sounds much better (check out the video of that performance after the jump). At least it got Russell Brand’s nipples hard.
