America Rejects ‘The Hills’ And ‘Gossip Girl’

September 11th, 2008 // 7 Comments

Ugly Betty star American Ferrera totally dissed the reality television proponents of mediocrity also known as The Hills cast when she told Seventeen magazine that she’s disappointed in the way female relationships are often portrayed on TV.

“Like, if you’re watching The Hills or 90210, all the backstabbing shapes the way we act–you go to school, and you think your job is to find a sworn enemy and be jealous of each other.”

She also threw Gossip Girl into the mix saying that although she did “love Blake [Lively],” she was dismayed that “shows like Gossip Girl kind of condition us to be mean.”

I do agree that the chicks from The Hills suck but because well, they just do. But by her logic that also means that impressionable individuals watching Ugly Betty will be tempted to fake their own deaths and/or carry the baby of a dead magazine magnate to pay for an estranged husband’s medical treatment.

And to dress all crazy.

She has gotten too big for her britches lately. Her show has just as much backstabbing & what not among the women. Not just Amanda either … remember her fights w/ Henry’s baby momma … ?

shut the fuck up satan. the backstabbing on Ugly Betty is for dramatic effect. the backstabbing on the hills, gossip girl etc totally sends the wrong message to little kids.

shut the fuck up satan. the backstabbing on Ugly Betty is for comedic effect. and at least on the show she always tried to do right by everyone. the backstabbing on the hills, gossip girl etc totally sends the wrong message to little kids.

I love America Ferrera, and I think she genuinely cares about how women are portrayed on television shows. Ugly Betty is like a soap/comedy show; no one takes it seriously. On the other hand, shows like The Hills are broadcast to impressionable teenage girls as the ‘real’ way to treat others.

America Ferrera rocks! She’s one of those actresses that I really respect from the bottom of my heart, and what she says really is true.

Can you say sour grapes, America? All four shows are basically dramas that rot the brain — one (FuglyBetty)just has a large, very unattractive heroine. And this, apparently, makes it the best show for teenage girls to watch? She’s (AF) several pounds overweight and suddenly she has a Ph.D. in physchology? (I didn’t realize those went hand-in-hand). Her show isn’t any better than the others, really, it’s like comparing snickers, m&m’s, kit kat bars and junior mints…they’re all unhealthy. One just has ugly packaging. The End.
