Well, it happened. The Hunger Games exceeded all expectations last weekend. The first film in the trilogy based on Suzanne Collins’ novels of the same name opened to huge numbers and rave reviews. Boasting the largest weekend opening for a non-sequel, The Games raked in $152 million domestically placing it third overall behind The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Audiences flocked to see how the violence would be adapted for the big screen and PG-13 rating as well as Josh Hutcherson’s sharp jawline. Seriously, who else lost focus just staring at that distractingly square chin?
Jokes aside, the film had another aspect that had the teens clamoring to see: the beginning of the love triangle between Katniss, Peeta and Gale. Katniss initially has feelings for Gale who she leaves behind to participate in The Games with Peeta. Their romance is possibly exaggerated for the television to help them win but there is definitely something there. Oh, love triangles. It’s the go-to relationship device that always sucks us in and will never get old. But what is it about these complex relationships that make them so exciting and immediately gain our emotional investment? Is it the constant ebb and flow of one individual to another? The potential for different and complicated pairings that leave the participants constantly questioning their feelings for one suitor or the other? The hope for a three-way? We’re sure it’s all of the above (oftentimes solely the latter). Launch the gallery to see some of the greatest and hottest love triangles in cinema and television.
