Shiny, precious jewels that have been passed down through through generations! Those are what make up Queen Elizabeth II’s personal jewel collections, and if I were her, I’d spend my entire birthday putting on said gems and waving to clothes hangers.
Her Majesty turns 86 today, though her officially birthday is celebrated every June with the Trooping of the Colour. She was born simply a princess to the Duke and Duchess of York, but when her uncle, Edward VIII abdicated the throne, Elizabeth II became the heir to the British throne.
“I say to people: ‘She’s my grandmother to me first and then she’s the Queen.’ Words that come from her, I take very personally and I really appreciate,” future king Prince William told biographer Robert Hardman about his “granny.”
“My relationship with my grandmother has gone from strength to strength,” William added. ”As a shy, younger man it could be harder to talk about weighty matters. It was: ‘This is my grandmother who is the Queen, and these are serious historical subjects.’ As I’ve got older, she’s become an even more important part of my life, so it’s much easier. And obviously, with the wedding, she was a massive help.”
