2010 MTV VMAs Recap: Gaga Sweeps, Chelsea Keeps It Dirty

September 12th, 2010 // 14 Comments

Well, this year’s MTV Video Music Awards were delightful thanks to insane and brilliant host Chelsea Handler! While I’m sure some people hated her humor, I thought it was so fresh and honest and straight from the hip that it made it interesting to watch. More thoughts on her later…

Check out my breakdown of everything during the show after the jump, including the award winners and highlights!

Plus, we brought you tons of red carpet coverage last night (and plenty more is coming today). Check out the individual red carpet galleries for Audrina Patridge, Lady Gaga, Joe Manganiello, Hayley Williams, Katy Perry, Ashley Greene, Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Justin Timberlake, Jane Lynch, Penn Badgley, Ciara, Selena Gomez, Florence Welch, Drake, Snooki and Rosario Dawson.

Red Carpet thoughts:First of all, Snooki looked exactly like post-op Lil Kim. More tan than a giant redwood tree. Nicki Minaj and will.i.am was completely underwhelming. She was dressed like a sad reject from one of the Spy Kids movies and he was painted completely black and looked to be made out of leather. Lady Gaga looked strikingly odd – as usual – in her Alexander McQueen gown on the white carpet, bringing either discharged service members who were openly gay or those who voluntarily left the service. I do love her that she does use her celebrity for a good cause. The Show:Eminem opened the show. And then Rihanna showed up, which was delightful – but she was dressed like Courtney Love in her Hole years. Justin Bieber‘s performance was a little too High School Musical. Not interesting, k thanks. However, Usher‘s performance was outstanding. Like, unbelievably so.I have been a fan of Florence & The Machine for a long time and I am so happy she performed on the show in the states this year in a very tribal performance.Taylor Swift? Utterly forgettable and boring. I understand that it was supposed to be this epic, sweeping song but it just fell really short because she’s not a powerful performer. And Drake‘s performance with Mary J. Blige was not my cup of tea at all.Kanye‘s performance was totally white-washed and his red suit was hot. His song was kind of the apology for his bad behavior that’s plagued him for a while, especially after the incident with Swift at last year’s VMAs.  Chelsea Handler‘s jokes were so fucking spot-on! Making fun of Gaga, Taylor Swift, Bieber and Kanye West. She was really refreshing in being utterly honest. The little vignettes she did with Ke$ha and the rest of the Best New Artist Nominees was amazing as was her bits with the Jersey Shore cast. The winners: Best Dance Video – Lady Gaga, “Bad Romance”
