12 Amazing Moments and Quotes from Ariana Grande’s One Love Manchester Benefit Concert
A star-studded benefit concert for victims of the Manchester bombing kicked off to tearful fans, heavy police guard and clattering helicopters on Sunday, just a day after another militant attack in London.
Emotions ran high as fans – many with colorful face make-up, costume bunny ears and the popular Manchester Bee t-shirts – poured into the city’s Old Trafford cricket ground for the show headlined by pop star Ariana Grande, whose May 22 concert ended with 22 dead and over 100 wounded when a bomber struck.
Some broke down in tears, while others clapped, danced and joked with police officers on horseback patrolling the crowds. The event began with a moment of silence for the victims of the bombing less than two weeks ago.
The show opened to a minute of silence and a performance by Marcus Mumford of Mumford and Sons.
Mumford urged the crowd to “not be afraid.”
Grande’s manager, Scooter Braun, thanked the crowd for coming out and paid tribute to the victims before introducing the singer. Deafening cheers greeted Grande as she took the stage.
Grande made an emotional return to the stage at her One Love Manchester benefit concert today in the wake of the terrorist attack that struck her concert last month — extolling the “love” that filled the arena and recognizing a teen who was killed in the bombing.
Between songs, an emotional Grande addressed the crowd.
“Before we go any further I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for being here today,” she said. “I want to thank you so much for coming together and being so loving and strong and unified. I love you guys so much and I think that the kind of love and unity you’re displaying is the kind of medicine that the world really needs right now.”
“The kind of love and unity we’re displaying is what the world needs right now.” Heartfelt words from Ariana Grande at One Love Manchester.
At last count, the event has so far raised $12 million for the families and victims of the attack.
